64bit Win7 machine, why do I need 32bit codecs?
Hi I'm not 100% clear on the install process to get everything I need for my Windows7 media center.
Can I just install the 64bit codecs and the x64 components? No? The web page for x64 states This release is designed to compliment the 32bit codec packages. The installation requires the 32bit codec release to be installed as a prerequisite. What part of this am I missing? Why would I want 32bit codecs on my 64bit install of Windows 7? Apologies for the confusion, just want to be sure on what I should install in what order. |

RE: 64bit Win7 machine, why do I need 32bit codecs?
The base package, Win7codecs sets up the registry no matter what platform you use. The x64 Components addon, as the name suggests, enables x64 Media Center to play all your files too. The Settings Application of the x64 release will not function unless the 32bit package is present.
Also remember, when uninstalling, to remove the x64 Components 1st, (uninstall buttons are on the Help TAB) because it is an ADDON to the 32bit release. One setting that is universal, and only exists in the 32bit Settings Application, is found on the Help TAB, associate filetypes. If you intend to use the Windows supplied players, you will want to use this button. I suggest you read this thread for setup hints. If UAC is turned OFF, please uninstall my software
Default UAC settings are required for my software to function properly |

Ahh so I need all three to be installed? Order doesn't matter on install - just on uninstall according to the forums? Uninstalling on 64bit |

I see 2 links. 32bit 1st, followed by x64. UNINSTALL: People caused thier own problems by not reading instructions and try all kinds of uninstall methods that just caused them more problems. I disabled the usual uninstall methods and force users to use the UNINSTALL buttons I provide on the Help TAB because this is the only way I can reset your system to a pre-installation environment. Once you install my software, and you see 1st hand what it can do for you, you'll understand why the conventional uninstall methods are disabled. If UAC is turned OFF, please uninstall my software

RE: 64bit Win7 machine, why do I need 32bit codecs?
eShell.exe is a 64-bit executable. The codecs used by this application are purely 64-bit. Therefore theoretically or logically the x64 Components should be enough to *only* use 64-bit applications. That is, you are using Windows Media Player x64 etc.

RE: 64bit Win7 machine, why do I need 32bit codecs?
Shark007, I understand that the current x64 Components are not a standalone installation. What I thought and meant was, if you perform the necessary registry modifications and/or using regsvr32, there should be a way to get MC accept the codecs without installing any 32-bit codecs at all.

RE: 64bit Win7 machine, why do I need 32bit codecs?
Thanks for the advice, all running super sweet now. Something a bit odd happened initially with avi files freezing up when playing them through media center. I uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed and all is good including MKV playing.
They aren't thumbnailing, they're just black but they play in wmp and mce so I'm happy. On my old vista 32bit box after I deleted my thumbnail cache and refreshed all avi/divx/mov/mkv etc wouldn't rebuild for some reason. Given all thumbnails look so good at the moment (except mkv and old dvr-ms files from the vista box) I am too paranoid to delete the cache in case they don't come back. Sweet work, all solid at the moment fingers crossed. |

If I uninstall the x64 Components and clear my thumbnail cache- are explorer thumbs gone forever until I reinstall? (I am running wmplayer32* as my primary media player on Win 7 x64)
