Here is the first build out of the planned releases.
It contains a number of fixes and improvements, and a timely update of FFmpeg.
If no new bugs or regressions are found, I will release this as 2.2.1 final.
The next couple of builds will be more interesting. ;)

- Fixed alpha in images (e.g. png, gif etc.)
- Fixed small 'e' in Eng language tag of mkv files
- Fixed bitdepth bug in mkv property parser (bar's last sample)
- Added mk3d support (3D mkv) and .mk3d as a default extension
- Allow extensions to be written both with and without a dot in the 'Thumbnail Extensions' setting
- Updated FFmpeg
- Some small general improvements

It might be wise to do another small FFmpeg update, as I think they fixed a few small memory leaks since your last update.

Does the new ref-counting API in FFmpeg bring any performance benefits for Icaros?

I've already updated FFmpeg again internally, so the next build will feature the latest version.

The new API does give me better control, but the performance benefits are minor
in a thumbnail scenario, where you often only need to parse a single frame.

Raw AAC files doesn't have the ability to contain cover art.
I'm not sure what you mean, when you say "No thumbnail"?

Tested the new beta and I got a problem.

Icaros can't generate thumbnails for some m2ts files and makes explorer hang and lag.
Deactivating Icaros and thumbnails get generated (by the native windows one).
