I'm not going to pretend I understand the mechanics behind it. But I can select it play a file and see the washed out detail. Unselect it go back to default (Haali) play the file and the detail is there.

Only way I figured this out is changing one setting at a time and then testing the results.

Back to my original query.

I obsessed over this (not being current) and uninstalled the old codecs and installed the latest, spent a few hours playing with every setting one at a time. I finally found what was causing the "softness/blurriness" in WMC. When I select the LAV splitter it causes the softness, if I leave it as Haali (default), I'm fine and the detail looks as it should.

My apologies you're right, this didn't do it, the differences are so subtle it's hard to tell. There appears to be some smoothing going on with the new codec releases that isn't there in the older releases. A good example would be being able to pick out pores on skin on a 1080p sample with the older codecs I have vs smoothing and more of a paintbrush look with the new ones. That's about the best way I can explain it.

The older releases don't have LAV, I'm grasping at straws I just can't isolate the problem, tried different video cards and I'm using vlc as reference.

Shark is there a repository of prior releases i can sort through, I only have this current release and a very old one id like to continue my testing to see where I notice the change.

Finally found what it was - AMD Catalyat Video quality enhancements, what a tremendous time sink and garbage config Sad

Hopefully I can save people some major grief, just disable the enhancements, screen shot attached.

Very nice catch. I encountered the same problem as you. VLC was flawless but WMP was iffy. Image is a lot better now.
