Deskscapes stops working

I just realized that with Shark's codec pack installed, most Deskscapes desktop animations will refuse to loop (they run through the video once, then stop). Apparently, this affects all those that are based on MPEG-2 videos. Without the codec pack installed, they work fine. Is there a setting that fixes this? I am using the newest release, 3.3.8 for Win7 x64 (both x86 and X64 packages are installed).

I have seen that a number of people have the same issue.

That doesn't help; video still stops after one pass. This is in 3.4.1, on Win7x64; I disabled Haali in both the 32- and the 64-bit control panels.

OK, then re-enable Haali and disable LAV

Now, if somebody could tell me, or direct me to a source that would explain, what a "splitter" is and what it does, that would be awesome. Clearly, I know next to nothing about this stuff...
