Doing this will revert ffdshow to an ealier version (3156). I was already thinking that you had found the culprit when three different video files opened without problem; but the fourth one froze and after a restart, one of the first three files that had opened the first time, halted the system too. Unfortunately, neither a following uninstall nor a system restore was able to create the perfectly stable system, I was used too. Now, random (but rare) freezes occur when I start a video file. |

RE: Freezing Video
This problem is specific to a certain FEW people; it is not being experienced by many.
This means that either your hardware (and/or drivers) are responsible or that some other installation on your system is messing with the codecs. If UAC is turned OFF, please uninstall my software
Default UAC settings are required for my software to function properly |

Usually, I don't use personal firewalls because they have always been, all things considered, not just more or less useless but actually a hazard to the safety of a PC. However, a week before I had the first problems, I installed the Outpost Firewall to test it. Apparently, the version I installed, added a couple of problems to a 64bit Windows 7 installation, including the freezes that I observed. It also occasionally crashed the Windows Explorer when I right-clicked on a folder - which was the hint I needed to figure out what went wrong on my system. As far as I know, the problem with Outpost occurs most likely, when it doesn't cooperate 100% with the anti-virus program, on my system: Avira Antivir. I have no trouble with Outpost when Avira isn't present, and vice versa. But since I don't see any benefit in the personal firewall anyway, it was not difficult to decide what program I wanted to keep. So, everyone who faces freezes like I did or crashes of the windows explorer should check his anti-virus program and personal firewall (if present) and especially the combination. Some, like mine, are just prone to cause problems. |

One more tip: anyone who experiences crashes while clicking the right mouse button has most likely installed a program that messes up the Windows Context Menu; especially the 64bit versions have quite a view problems in that area. Apart from uninstalling any program that might cause the crashes, you can also first disable the context menu items one by one to see what program exactly does the damage (that's what I did). You can do so by working directly within the registry or use a program. Freeware, like ShellMenuView, does the trick most of the time but not always. Disabeling the firewall in the context menu didn't help to prevent the freezes, of course -- nor did it any good to deactivate it completely. Only an uninstall solved that problem. |
