Passtrough, Games and Dolby Digital
Hey there,
I was wondering how it is possible to pass thru the DD signal to my receiver. I was just playing Battlefield 3 and it appeared to me that this game has a DD support (due to that DD logo in the beginning). Passtrough works fine with all my movies and music but somehow I wasn't able to get it work in games. When I play Battlefield 3 there's a "PCM" logo on my receiver. I expect it to be a DD logo, or am I incorrect? In Battlefield itself I activated home cinema and deactivated stereo. Might there be any setting to be done within Shark ? Or does anyone has any experience with gaming and Surround Sound? I am using an ATI 5xxx and HDMI. No S/PDIF ! Thanks in advance to everyone! |

RE: Passtrough, Games and Dolby Digital
Most likely the game itself is decoding the DD (ac3) audio.
That is why PCM is sent to the receiver. PCM = decoded audio all audio becomes PCM before playback. Your receiver decodes digital streams to PCM to be able to play them although the receiver reports the signal it is receiving. |

RE: Passtrough, Games and Dolby Digital
Hi,
I´m new in the forum and this is my firs post. I apologyze because im not very good in english yet, anyway i´ll try to explain as well as i can. Recently i bought a 5.1 (Logitech Z906) and when the decode light is on the sound is amazing. Unfortunately i only get it in films. How can i get decoding for games? For example Battlefield 3. Like i read before the game may be able to. I´ve read that if i want decoding for games i need a special kind of soundcard. SPDIF of the mobo is only for video? Thanks in advance. |

If you are using HDMI and your Z906 Display says PCM/HDMI/Digital - whatever - it should be decoding the games correctly. If you are using SPDIF you need a soundcard which supports Dolby Digital Live. cheers! |

I'm using SPDIF, i don't know how could i use HDMI because ive only hdmi ports in my Video Card and i think if i use it im not getting sound from muy Z906 or if i do i wont have link to my screen.
Anyway which sound card could you recomend me for gaming getting my Z906 in decode mode? Thx in advance and for the answer. Best regards. |

It depends on which video card you are using. HDMI Surround Sound ATI since 5xxx. HDMI Surround Sound Nvidia since GT 430. Therefore you need Realtek HD-Audio Drivers. I was assuming that you had a high-level-video card because you wanted to play Battlefield 3, in which case you must have had a card that supports the Surround Sound transfered through HDMI. However, the alternative is -as I said- Dolby Digital Live. A classic souncard which supports it would be The Asus Xonar (click). I cannot guarentee you that this is the best or the cheapest offer, but it's a pretty safe one ;-) if you want to be extra sure you should do a little research by yourself. Hope this helps
