Thumbnails not displaying for any video files
I recently had to do a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. After a lot of reading, I decided against installing multiple Codec Packs (K-Lite (Mega) & Win7, with their 64-bit add-ons), as I had before in 2009. Instead, I downloaded & installed only the Win7 codec pack (v. 3.6.0), followed by the Win7 codec pack, 64-bit components (v. 3.6.0). As per many forum postings, I made sure to check "Use FFDshow's codec" in the "H264" tab. After rebooting my computer, I was surprised to find that NONE of my thumbnails were showing for any of my FLV, AVI, or MP4 files. (Before installing the Win7 Codecs, my AVIs & MP4s were displaying thumbs.) I also tried resetting the thumbnail cache & rebooting again, but to no avail. Any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

RE: Thumbnails not displaying for any video files
Hi RDA1959,
Open the Settings App, on the Config tab, click 'Icaros Thumbnailing'. Does it display any errors? (The duplicate post will be deleted) OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

Click "OK". After that, thumbnailing will work.

RE: Thumbnails not displaying for any video files
Hi Xanashi,
Many thanks for your prompt & successful reply! Installing that "Redistributable Package" restored all my thumbs!! I do have another issue that I hope you can also solve. Please refer to attached screenshot. In my general "Videos" folder, the folders are displaying differently. Some look like a "Documents" folder, some either display a generic (AVI) filmstrip or nothing, while others display an actual thumbnail. I would prefer all of my video folders to once again display the actual thumbs & wondered how to do this...? |

RE: Thumbnails not displaying for any video files
The second folder (BG1-5) looks like that because it contains sub-folders.
To get the rest of the files updated, I have written a small utility for that exact purpose. It hasn't been publicly released yet, so I will PM you a link to it. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

RE: Thumbnails not displaying for any video files
If you look into that folder, there is probably more than one non-video file present.
The "folder thumbnail" is generated using the two files that was last added to (or modified in) the directory. Usually files takes precedence over sub-folders, which means folders like the second folder, probably do not have any files present in the folder root. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

RE: Thumbnails not displaying for any video files
Dear Xanashi,
I had wanted to thank you for all your help, but I was unable to access the Forum yesterday. I am very relieved & glad that all of my video thumbnails are now displaying. The "Icaros Thumbnail Updater" utility helped with most of my video folders. I checked into the folder that was circled in green in my last screenshot & isolated those .avi video files, along with their .sfk & .sfl files (rendered in Sony Vegas Pro 8) that were not, for whatever reason, generating thumbnails even though the contents of that entire folder were rendered identically & around the same time. I compared the "Properties" between these & the others, but could find no discrepancies. (I was surprised, though, to now see 3 "Account Unknown" (see screenshot). Do you know what this means, & should I be concerned?) I ended up re-rendering this odd lot, & that seemed to do the trick. I even took it one step further after reading your last post's explanation that "the "folder thumbnail" is generated using the two files that were last added to (or modified in) the directory" & was able to re-render those video clips that I wanted to display as folder thumbnails. But again, this method worked only some of the time, & I'm really stumped as to why I can't get all of my folders to display consistently...? Furthermore, I have also been having problems changing any folder's image in the customary way (Properties >> Customize >> Choose File (to show on this folder icon)). After choosing & opening a file image, I "Apply" & click "OK". However, the selected image does not show up immediately as before (& as it should). I now have to add a folder (an empty "TEST" folder) to the folder whose image I'm trying to change. Once this "TEST" folder has been added, the new image appears (sometimes I need to re-boot), & I can then delete the empty "TEST" folder. This, too, can be inconsistent, & a folder may revert to another image (especially in my backup drive). Crazy...! I'm aware that some of these issues may be a Windows thing, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you can also solve these puzzles! Many thanks. My knowledge on how Windows handles folder thumbnailing is about the same as yours. I really can't say why it acts the way it does. (04-13-2012 07:43 AM)RDA1959 Wrote: ... When you say "as before", does that mean, that this problem has only recently started to happen? I tried creating an empty folder and add a custom picture to it, and my experience was the same as yours. I then ran the folder through the Thumbnail Updater tool, and the picture showed up.
