Vista x64 Explorer Thumbnail Crash
I had a version that didn't support 10-bit encodes yet. Then after I upgraded, my explorer has been crashing on video thumbnails ever since.
I searched, but you seemed to try to blame it on the videos and recommended converting all of them to something else with Metafox... that doesn't really cut it. :/... something's wrong with the thumbnail software, it needs to be fixed. These are files I've had for years that have never had a problem. Also, when the x64 package installs, it gets some error installing some registry thing that I have to ignore, so maybe that could have something to do with our problem. Reset All & Suggested Settings doesn't fix it. |

RE: Vista x64 Explorer Thumbnail Crash
Hi Tiffany,
Try this: 1. Go into Settings App, and on the Config tab click "Icaros Thumbnailing". 2. Click 'Deactivate'. 3. Download the Portable version of Icaros 2.0 from this post. 4. Reboot, or restart Explorer.exe 5. Go into the Vista Codecs installation directory, and remove any Icaros file + DirectShowLib-2005.dll. 6. Extract the content of the newly downloaded version of Icaros into the same directory that you removed the old files from. 7. Now try Re-activating Icaros. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

![]() I tried running it from the folder manually too, and the config thing came up and I activated it, but explorer still crashes. |

RE: Vista x64 Explorer Thumbnail Crash
Hmm...
Does it crash when Icaros is inactive? Is it a single file that causes the crash, a specific kind of files or all files in general? OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

RE: Vista x64 Explorer Thumbnail Crash
It looks alright. Could you provide a sample of that file.
There is a sample creation utility on the Misc tab of the Settings App. Use it to create a 40MB sample and upload that to mediafire.com. Post the url here. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

But uh, as a fair warning... I wouldn't watch it at work or around family. By the way, I'll note that my explorer crashed while making the sample, and well... probably a least 3 times while doing this, even though I have the folder as all types rather than thumbnails. I guess it must read the thumbnail at some point or something. I'll also note that the Ikaros software will only open from the 32-bit folder, and won't work from the 64-bit one. |

I guess it must read the thumbnail at some point or something. All this sounds awfully suspicious, if you ask me. I just tested the sample and it generated a thumbnail without any problems here. It shouldn't matter that I'm on Win7, as Win7 and Vista uses the same method to extract the thumbnails. When you extract the portable version of Icaros, you don't have to extract the contents of the 32-bit/64-bit folders, just open IcarosConfig and it will perform the right setup for you. Does the crashes stop if you deactivate Icaros? Does it stop if you disable thumbnailing altogether? (as in Organize->Folder options->View->Always show icons, never thumbnails) OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |

If I disable thumbnailing it doesn't crash, but if I disable Ikaros and view thumbnails, it still crashes. If I downgrade to 5.9.5 (Vista) and 2.8.8 (x64) then the thumbnailing works flawlessly without a single crash. I tested just now to confirm. Staring at thumbnails right now that would make me crash prior, and with the old version they do not do so. |

RE: Vista x64 Explorer Thumbnail Crash
Hmm....
Let's try to rule one thing out at a time. For testing, could you try uninstalling Shark's codecs, and install the standalone version of Icaros, with the installer from the same post as before? Remember to activate it after installation. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 |
