Win 7 codecs won't uninstall
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit OS from the same flavor of Vista. I forgot to uninstall your Vista codec package before installing Windows 7; they wouldn’t uninstall properly after the upgrade since the Settings Application recognized Windows 7 instead of Vista.
I deleted the Vista Codecs folder (and I empty the Recycle Bin regularly) and installed the Windows 7 codec package immediately thereafter. “Version.doc” says the version is 2.08 Final. All worked nicely. And the Settings Application ran as expected. I then found an entry in the Programs and Features application of the Control Panel and managed, with some difficulty, to eliminate that entry. Now I want to install the new version of the Windows 7 codecs (2.15), but the Settings Application would not run. A message popped up saying the Settings Application had to reside in the Tools folder. I checked and VERIFIED that IT WAS THERE. The nearest I figure there is something in the registry that remained. I also noticed that there is no entry in the Programs and Features (once called Add/Remove Programs) in the Control Panel for the Windows 7 codec package. So I am completely at sea as to how to uninstall the current version of Windows 7 codecs and to verify that there are no conflicts with the Vista codec installation that I hope is gone. Can you help me with this? As I previously said, the Settings Application does not run. Yes, version 2.08 is still installed. Thanks. |

RE: Win 7 codecs won't uninstall
thats one hell of a mess you have created for yourself.
Use the following command (from the vista pack) to see if there is anything left of that; I'm sure there is. msiexec.exe /I{F9FD80CE-0448-4D4F-8BCD-77FC514C3F99} click next, then click Remove there will be errors because of the missing files, but it will help cleanup the registry. This next command will innitiate the uninstaller for the Windows 7 codecs; msiexec.exe /uninstall {8C0CAA7A-3272-4991-A808-2C7559DE3409} PLEASE USE THE UNINSTALL BUTTON PROVIDED ON THE HELP TAB TO REMOVE THE CODECS IN THE FUTURE x'ing my fingers this gets you back on track. BTW, from what I read, you will have all sorts of issues because of that upgraded OS, to bad you didn't research doing a clean install with an upgrade disk 1st. If UAC is turned OFF, please uninstall my software
Default UAC settings are required for my software to function properly |

RE: Win 7 codecs won't uninstall
All is OK now, Shark. Thanks. The first command showed no residual Vista codec material. The second command uninstalled the Windows 7 codecs nicely. And, as you might expect, the installation of 2.1.5 went smoothly. Yup, it all works.
As to other issues with the OS, none have arisen. Thanks a bunch. Kent |

The config program Help tab uninstall would not work even when run as administrator. Using the command line uninstall as noted, I was able to install the latest. edit: just fyi, for some reason I have to use an admin command prompt to uninstall on W7. Maybe it's something to do with build 7077 but I seem to remember being able to uninstall the recommended way in the past. Weird. I'm just uninstalling again today(Thanksgiving Day) to put the new release on. |
