Your explorer is ALWAYS open, as this provides the desctop. YOu can kill it and you have the blank screen you described. You don't need to reboot your computer, just press CTRL ALT DEL, Taskmanager -->new task--> type "explorer.exe". This brings back your desktop.

I have observed the same behaviour; perhaps background thumbnailing is blocking explorer.exe

Or Windows 8 just "freezes" an exisiting Graph when closing an application. Anyway, no idea, but it definitely worth the effort fo Shark007 to look into it.

Why so blunt? Others migh have this behaviour as well but keep quite as it is not bothering them? For example me. I suspect some component of your package ist still being used by explorer.exe, perhaps during the thumbnailing process, which provokes Windows to sugest to kill the explorer. I had this in 6 out of 8 cases when uninstalling your package under win 8, but just restart the explorer.exe
