my friends system running x64 keeps crashing using avi's

Tell the person to check C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and C:\Windows\System32 for ffdshow.ax
delete the file, and reboot the computer.

Also know, choosing to disable the DMO codecs on the SWAP TAB will allow AVI files to display subtitles.
