embarrassed to say it's not working for me :(
I'm running a pretty fresh install of Windows 7 Home Pro x64, not much installed from stock, AVG, J River Media Center and Cyberlink Suite, Including PowerDVD.
I'm pretty new at all this, but have been reading off and on for years, and pretty much undertand the big overview of how this codec, filter, DirectShow jazz works, but have not gotten my hands dirty with it until now. I'm pretty computer literate, and have searched quite a bit, but I'm still having trouble. I missed uninstalling Cyberlink PowerDVD before installing this pack, but otherwise I believe I did everything correctly. I installed the x86 bit version, then x64. I looked over the settings (maybe only in 32 bit), and tried to play some files. Some worked, others not. Windows Media Player did not show ape, flac or flv files in the file/open dialog while browsing, nor in the filetype drop-down window listing of file types on the right. I've never used a 64 bit system until now, so I didn't notice at first the 2 versions of everything (this, media center, Internet Explorer, and am still not sure if there's different versions of WMC). I also am not sure I need to bother/care about the 32 bit versions of stuff, and their settings, or if I can only work in the x64 versions and all's well. anyway, I uninstalled the x64, then x86, then PowerDVD, then all the rest of the suite, then J River Media Center, then anything else that might possible have codecs, then reinstalled the pack, in order. I then re-read all the instructions in the forum, which were more detailed, and noticed a couple of things I had missed at 2am last night. I set the associations to WMP in the x86 settings, then set some associations in 32 bit, saved everyting. then x64 settings, then saved. tried some files, still no love. no ape, flac, flv in WMP in x64. in x86 I can see flv files in the file type settings in WMP and see the files in the library, but no video actually plays. I can't see ape files of flac files however. I can pick them as a choice in the file type drop down column header in the search window (to filter results), but when I select either, no files actually become visible. Then while looking thru all the web pages, forums and search results, I noticed that I should have uninstalled from the help tab on the program, which I neglected to notice before, meaning I uninstalled from control panel. I'd like to think this won't make a difference, but thought it worth mentioning. I have since uninstalled again, this time using the help tab to uninstall. I have double checked the control panel and nothing I can see there should have any codecs installed. I am about to install again, but wanted to get this posted so I might have some guidance tomorrow when I'll have time to work on it again. I'm sure this is my user error somehow, since I can't find one other instance or mention of anyone having this kind of trouble (makes me feel pretty stupid). It seems pretty straightforward to install and use this very well regarded software, and I"m just not getting it right somehow. any help or guidance is very much appreciated. *Wife is not impressed with my skills

RE: embarrassed to say it's not working for me :(
Thanks very much for the quick response.
I installed them again last night, and did try those settings as you suggest, based on a link to another forum post I found, but nothing really changed. I can see someof the extension types in the file/open file type drop-down window, but can't actually find/select any of these files inside WMP. if I right-click an ape file or a flv file and select play with WMP, it tells me it doesn't have the correct codec to play the file. I'm really confused as to what could be the problem. I ended up uninstalling again, using the program. installed one last time, still no luck, and finally have uninstalled a 4th time. I really want this to work, but just don't have any idea what to do at this point. I think I might just reinstall windows 7 fresh and try again, but am still hoping to avoid this fate. Again, I appreciate any help you can provide. |

I have no incite as to how you broke your current system. Avoid the crap, stick with shark's codecs, come here for answers as required. DO NOT use reg hacks etc, ask here... I will help you solve your playback issues on an unbroken system. If UAC is turned OFF, please uninstall my software

RE: embarrassed to say it's not working for me :(
Thanks again.
I've got a new motherboard on order to allow simultaneous dual digital output, so I'm going to wait until it arrives and then do a fresh install again. I'll certainly let you know if I have any issues with that once it's running again. |

RE: embarrassed to say it's not working for me :(
Okay, I formatted the drive, re-installed W7 x64, then installed the 32 bit program, them made the changes you suggested above.
I then installed the 64 bit program, then made the changes you suggest. Then I tested. Everything seemed to work fine, specifically that ape files would play in WMP. I also set in your software the option to make x64 the default player. I then installed the MPC software, downloaded from your "tools" website, in order to use hardware acceleration. I then installed the rest of the stuff for this machine, specifically my Realtek onboard sound driver, the Catalyst video card driver (this was NOT installed in the last setup), Java 6.17, Flash 10.1, and J River Media Center. When i double-checked to make sure everything still worked, I discovered that ape files were no longer playing in either version of WMP. I also discovered that asp video files were not playing either. I don't recall testing asp files in the beginning, so I'm not sure they got "broke", but are currently not working. I then uninstalled MPC, then x64 settings, then x86 settings, then rebooted. I then installed x86, made the settings you suggested, then x64, then the settings, then rebooted. I didn't install the MPC again, in order to test without it. I still cannot play ape files or asp files in MWP. Everything else seems to be working fine, as far as I can tell. I'm going to have to reinstall everything again when the new motherboard arrives next week, so I'm happy to text/troubleshoot when I re-install again, but I'm not really sure what to do different this time. I'm not sure this has anything to do with anything, but J River Media Center is able to play ape files natively, as their lead developer is actually the creator of the ape codec. I didn't test functionality every step of the way, so I can't say that installing JRMC is what caused ape files to stop working in MWP, but I though it worth mentioning. anyway, I'm open to any suggestions, so let me know if/how I can test for you to help bring this along. thanks!!! I just uninstalled JRMC and then re-set all associations to MWP, but still no ape or asf files play in WMP. Just an FYI |

RE: embarrassed to say it's not working for me :(
1st of all, know that the ape decoder is 32bit only. Neither x64 WMP or MC can playback ape files. I suggest simply toggling to the x64 WMP and back to 32bit because this action will setup FLAC playback in x64 MC. Leave the 32bit player set as default afterwards.
As for what is the cause of your (32bit) ape playback getting hosed? I have no idea. If UAC is turned OFF, please uninstall my software
