mp4 problem with 6 channel ACC

Most of the codec world is new to me, so I apologize if I am missing something obvious. So far my only file format that is giving me trouble straight out of the box in MP4. I only get 2 channel PCM output from WMP or 7MC (32 bit)...this is over digital optical audio. Other 6 channel tracks play okay so far, like mkv. I tried changing the speaker config, but that didn't do anything...what am I missing?
