Windows 8 OS Problems - HurlW - 03-06-2012 08:15 AM Mr. Shark007 and anyone sees this: Hi. I just got the OS updated to Windows 8 consumer preview. (But the same problems occurred when using Windows 7, too, kind of. ) I've tried Win7codecs 3.5.3, 3.5.4 and Win8codecs 1.0.2 with my Windows 8, and all of them have the same problems as follows: 1 Something's wrong with the codecs: The video (mostly MKV) shutters sometimes, not smoothly played. I've tried the "suggested settings" or "disable media foundation", "disable Microsoft's Video/Audio codecs", no help. 2 Problem uninstalling the program: It's always telling me I should close IE before uninstalling it, but as a matter of fact, IE was never running and I even disconnected the Internest connection and closed any other program that's possibly running. 3 Leaving me no choice, if I agree to "automatically close IE and proceed the uninstallation", it does proceed, but my screen becomes all black and the computer is kind of dead, I'll have to reboot it everytime. 4 So I kind of tried K lite like I used to. But shark007 wouldn't let me. Even I uninstalled shark, it looks like it's not willing to be completely gone from my computer, and even I manually deleted the remains of it, as many as I can find, I deleted them, when I try to install K lite, K lite will tell me it has "detected win7codecs are installed in your system, you have to uninstall win7codecs to install K lite", but I never figured how I'm supposed to uninstall something that I have uninstalled... So as a result, even K lite is finally installed, it can't work along with my computer well, like it used to. I wonder if there is a way to competely uninstall win7/8 codecs... 5 The thumbnailing becomes a mess. Even belonging to the same extension, some have the thumbnail, some don't. And even the same file extensions could have different thumnails, after uninstalling shark007 products, the thumnails become blank, I'll upload a screenshot later. 6 I figured these problems probably have things to do with Windows 8's own inadequacies: I failed to notice at the first place that if this display issue is caused by the codecs, or the system itself: The resolution. I've chosen it to be the highest, which looks absolutely fine in Windows 7, now in Windows 8, same resolution, but if you look closer, you'll see the screen is filled with, like the pixels, but now with bigger cube/cells, you know, like a grid or something, if the pixels looks normal, it wouldn't be too perceivable like this, but now the little cells are much bigger then the usual size, it's like you set your screen resolution to 1024*576 but its original size should be 1920*1080, so it's not so clear and comfortable and you can easily see the "grid". But a little difference is, when WMP plays a video, although you can still see the "grid", the image won't be too bad, because there are still "pixels" arranged inside each of the igger cubic cells, so the video is still kind of clear like HD quality, only like, there is a bigger fishnet covered on your HD screen. I'll post a screenshot later too. Have you guys encountered this display problem? I think it's probably just a Windows 8 thing. I probably should edit this post later but now my computer is half dead again. I'll have to post this for now and reboot the computer. Duh. Thanks for your time and help. Really appreciate it. RE: Windows 8 OS Problems - Shark007 - 03-06-2012 08:24 AM your issues are just that, your issues. I cannot reproduce any of them. Most likely, you need to install graphics drivers. As for uninstall, I would guess that you are using something like Revo Uninstaller. good luck with that. There are uninstall shortcuts in Control Panel | Programs and Features, also on the startmenu under Shark007 Codecs, and also on the Help TAB, learn to use ONE of the official uninstallers. I do have this "NVIDIA GeForce 500: Version 295.73 graphic driver" installed and it and its former versions worked just fine, at least with my Windows 7 and the first couple of hours after I installed Windows 8. I never know what the "Revo" stuff is and I never tried anything similar, I like always keeping my computer simple. Yes, I install/uninstall stuff only using their native/"official" installers/uninstallers. I was just wondering if you have tried the Windows 8 Preview now and had the same problems. Can't fully uninstall and if you look closer, the display grid issue. It might be not very noticeable, but it's there. I'll try screen capturing it here. Thanks. Well obviously this is not a problem. (03-06-2012 08:36 AM)HurlW Wrote: I never know what the "Revo" stuff is and I never tried anything similar, I like always keeping my computer simple. My next best guess to cause your issues... you choose to disable (turn down) the UAC (User Account Control) setting This needs to be set to the 'Default' position. Thank you so much for your time, sir. I really feel ashamed to take your time. Can you see the "grid" problem I'm talking about? I mean you have to look very closely to see the bigger "cells" than its usual size. Why's that? No I didn't turn down the UAC, and I ran "as the administrator" everytime doing everything. Here's how the invalid thumbnail looks: RE: Windows 8 OS Problems - Shark007 - 03-06-2012 08:54 AM maybe you missed this procedure: after installing the codecs, each Settings Application must be rightclicked and 'Run as Administrator' chosen at the bottom of the screen or the dropdown list depending where you rightclicked. I'm very aware of that and I did do the learning --- checking the "setting and usage" page of yours very carefully and as much useful information as possible from the Internet. So your screen doesn't look "gridy" at all (not only with video players, but everything), and you CAN uninstall win7/8codecs without being warned you should close IE or anything even if it's not really running, right? Well. Then it looks it is MY own issues. So far I only have 7 programs on the Control Panel list: Adobe Flash Player Google Chrome NVIDIA RealTek HD Aduio Skype A Chinese input software A download tool And I don't have any other program installed even if it won't be listed there if installed. I mean only these 7. And the codecs that I'm messing around with.

I do not have these grid lines but I am also not on Nvidia - I am using AMD as for IE warnings, it may be open in the background without your knowledge. (03-06-2012 09:04 AM)HurlW Wrote: Well. Then it looks it is MY own issues. At this time, I wish I had more to offer the fact that the MKV is not properly thumbed is quite confusing. Go to the Config TAB, click the button, [Icaros Thumbnailing] - is there any error message? (Format C: and setup Windows 8 CP)? Wow that reminds me. Yeah I installed Windows 8 without formatting C. I downloaded the Windows 8 iso and used the setup.exe to start the installation. After it's finished, Windows saved this "Windows.old" folder for me, which was appr. 10Gb, and then I deleted this folder using the Disk cleanup --- clean up system files. Then I found both the audio and graphic drivers by myself online, from their official sites. Quote:And if so, you have with the NVIDIA drivers of MS Windows 8 CP (not from NVIDIA Download) the same problems? I don't get what formatting C has to do with NVIDIA downloads here? You mean the drivers provided by the computer's manufacturer? They do reserve different drivers' info/download link for each specific PC type they produce. And yes, it looks like the gridy thing is indeed caused by the graphics driver's compatibility -- I tried the version the manufacturer suggested and the grid lines got better, but still not as perfect as I want. Still has the fuzzy grid. But the worst part is, it got me more severe problems -- split, frozen, slow-switching, bad-colored, all problematic screens. Looks like my task here is to find the right driver. I just don't know what the cause on earth is, I'm sure I didn't have the grid problem in the first hours or days I installed Windows 8 (which means the 295.73 NVIDIA should have no problem with the system, as NIVDIA's "smart scan" (a plug-in helping you decide the version) too suggests that version), then it must show up after some wrong action I took. Thanks for your help. (03-06-2012 09:08 AM)Shark007 Wrote: as for IE warnings, it may be open in the background without your knowledge. Sorry I made a mistake. It wasn't IE but "Windows Explorer", but like I said, I'm sure there wasn't any "Windows Explorer" open because I closed everything even including the Internet connection. No any "Explorer" possibly open at all. But who knows. Who knows about the "background" thing. Quote:At this time, I wish I had more to offer Don't worry. You already been very helpful. I really could care less about the thumbnails, but just find it kinda bizarre -- normally even if you choose WMP to be the default program for PDF, txt, or anything at all, even it wouldn't be able to actually open it, the file extension will at least get WMP's thumbnails, but now ever since I tried Win8codecs, it became so unpredictable. Look at the three thumbnails in the picture below: Same folder, same time, 3 vids all playable, yet irregular thumbnailing (I also tried cleaning up the cache and stuff). After clicking [Icaros...], it only showed me this (see the attached pic below, doesn't look wrong). Actually the program does a good job decoding files and all, now that I figured the grid thing is the graphics driver's problem (which is funny, after I uninstalled the driver, without any drivers, the videos stopped stuttering and played smoothly as hell, as smoothly as I've never seen, but just lower resolution, of course). Have you tried Klite? Thing is, only with Win7/8codecs it's all good, but after uninstalling it, if I want to use K lite again, then K lite will warn me I should uninstall Win7codecs first although I've already done that, and later K lite can't perform well like before Win7codecs are ever installed in the system, stutters and gets stuck. Thanks. |
