Blurry/Blocky, stumped... - riverace - 03-13-2012 05:01 PM

Been using Shark's codec packs for years. no issues...

Recently my HTPC died a horrible death and I had to build a new one, AMD A8, built in ATI 6550D video card, HDMI to receiver for video and audio. All good.

When playing videos and bitstreaming to the receiver through Windows 7 media center it looks good but not great, to the discerning eye like mine, its just not perfect. I play the same file in VLC and its 100% as it should be.

I am using FFdshow for all settings, WMC is set up for a 1080P 60hz output, 7.1.

Again all works as it should except the decoder/decoding within WMC is not at the same quality as VLC, this is annoying the hell out of me, Im stumped Sad

Please help, my settings attached Smile

I have nothing to decipher a .doc file.

In the 64bit app...
press [Reset All] - go to the Audio TAB, select bitstreaming - test
If you need subtitle support, set the Microsoft decoder on the H264 TAB

I use Open Office and can see the screenshots!
But a MS-Paint *.jpg screenshot would be better.
And I have with in WMP 12 and MC7 the same or better video quality like in VLC, MPC-HC or XBMC.

Well I got tired of messing with it, I know ill catch some heat for not being current, but I went back to an older version (the one saved from my older HTPC) and everything works as expected. Perfect video rendering, bitstreaming every container and audio stream...

I am happy once again, thanks for the help...

glad to hear it is working.
I suggest you go to the Help TAB and check the box to [x] DISABLE checking for new versions.
Once your installation gets 45 days old the settings app will remind you to upgrade.

One last question, everything plays perfectly, I am very happy once again the only complaint is a bluray rip I have, it's a16gb file in an mkv container with a vc-1 codec and truehd audio. It plays fine bit streaming to my receiver but in parts it looks washed out sort of like pastel colors. Again in VLC plays crystal clear. All the other formats (divx, xvid, h.264) play fine from wmc.

Thoughts?

On the MKV TAB, set the LAV splitter
on the SWAP TAB, set LAV for WVC1

seems it isnt there.
I'll put it in the next release - it exists in the 32bit app at this time.

Back to my original query.

I obsessed over this (not being current) and uninstalled the old codecs and installed the latest, spent a few hours playing with every setting one at a time. I finally found what was causing the "softness/blurriness" in WMC. When I select the LAV splitter it causes the softness, if I leave it as Haali (default), I'm fine and the detail looks as it should.

Just thought I'd report back.
