Frustrating Playback Issue - Saber - 06-03-2012 05:24 AM

Hi.
I am having some issue with the quality of my video playback and hope someone could help.

I am running
Win 7 x64
i5 cpu & P55 chipset.
ATI HD6850 card
HDMI out to receiver to panasonic Projector. 1080P
Latest Drivers and Sharks 3.6.4 codecs.

It is hard to describe but I have been watching a 720p mkv x264 video series and I am finding that in the background of scenes that slowly pan LEFT/RIGHT or UP/DOWN the picture seems to ghost a bit.

It is almost like the screen is not refreshing fast enough. I hope this is making sense.
The picture is not tearing and isnt jerky. Most of the time the video playback is fine.
I can notice it a little bit in other types of scenes and i have found it is particualy noticeable on background scenes that are darker.

I have tried all sorts of different refresh rates from 24HZ up to 60HZ but none seem to make a difference.
I have tried different versions of the codec packs as well as trying different x264 decoders.
I have tried a few different video driver versions also.

There seems to be a lot of Video settings in the CCP, Is there someting that I am missing.

I have been using an Nvida card for years but had to change it and so got an ATI one based on so many people saying that the ATI cards are better for a HTPC.

I recommend Catalyst 12.6 Beta after uninstalling a previous AVECC (CCC) of the old version.
Here are my AVECC/CCC settings from an older version (12.1):

PS: The settings are mostly the default settings!

In the Catalyst settings, everything shoud be set to off or unchecked except for 'Use automatic deinterlacing' and 'Pulldown detection'

Thanks for your advice.

I am running 12.6 catalyst drivers.
I have turned off all the video settings as per above.

Unfortuantly it didn't help.

I was watching it again this morning and thought a better way to discrible the problem.
One scene I was watching had a bunch of trees at night in the background and when the camera would pan left/right the trees looked like they wobble left/right. The people in front being followed by the camera looked fine.

Have you got any other suggestions.

I tried watching the same show on my laptop and it displayed fine so I know it is not the file.

Then it is not a codec or an ATI problem and is certainly due to the settings of your display device (projector?)!

Yea that is what I thought however I hooked up my 52" LED tv and it is showing the same problem. So I don't think it is the Projector.

Have you ever tried, turn off all image enhancement on the TV or beamer?
Have you tested different HDMI cable?

The plot thickens....

I wanted to confirm that it isn't something to do with the video file.
I got another version of the show that I was watching, same episode 720p and still and X264 file (both are AVC)
Amazingly this new one works fine. I watch the same scene and it is nice and smooth. WTF...
It also rules out projector, cable and amp as the problem.

So now I am even more confused because the original file is still plays fine on other computers just not this one.

Any new thoughts or will this one just stay a mystery.
