Hi all,

I'm having this persistent problem when playing MKV files with embedded subs.

Even though I have subs disabled, whenever they are embeded in an MKV file my CPU usage max's out (I'm assuming the video accelerator is being disabled) and I get jerky playback.

The only work around I have found is to demux the MKV file and remove the subtitle component, and the file plays perfectly with low cpu usage.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here?
Cheers,

I use coreavc/FFDshow post processing with Shark007 and x64 component codecs installed and all my files play properly with subtitles etc. But one mkv file doesn't play properly with these settings, it actually plays but shows a green screen while playing with audio in the background. I do have the Shark007 recommended settings enabled. Also I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on a Intel i3 M330 notebook.

The file used to play just fine. I upgraded my Shark007 software today (both x32 and the x64). Now I am not saying the upgrade caused this only that I noticed it afterwards.

NOW THE ODD THING is. It will play properly (well without subs) if I set it to *Use FFDShow DXVA codec*. But no other codec that I try under H264 will play it.

Any ideas why this one file would be doing this?

The only problem left is that I can't see the subtitles with some of of my avi files in media center. I tried different settings without success. However, since I am using Win7codecs it is ok with WMP (just with "Shark007 SUGGESTED settings"). In the same folder there are the avi file, one srt file and one sub file (I don't remenber why!) and the names are exactly the sames.
I don't know what to do :-(
Would the best setting be coreavc with ffdshow postprocessing?
i tried all the options using shark007 but nothing helped. i even tried the guides from the hack7mc site to disable the internal decoders, but it didn't help either.

I recently formatted my computer and installed win7 codecs + x64 components. Regardless of what settings I pick on the MPG~MP4 tab, my videos appear blocky, flickering back and forth between ~3 seconds of video. I've changed settings in both the 32 and 64 bit apps as admin and re-opened the settings apps as regular user afterwards. Not sure what else to do.
MPC-HC works fine, but it does not play my 1080p videos smoothly like WMP does.
Oh wait, I just re-opened x64 components and it says a new version is available. Exciting!

edit2-
Okay, after re-installing x64 components I still had problems. Checked Shark007 suggested settings and still had problems. Unchecked it and realized that all my settings got reset to defaults. The blockiness is fixed if I set 64 bit player as default. Problem solved. Thanks.
Okay, I usually test my 1080p mkv playback by playing the AIR OP (found at http://forums.bakabt.com/index.php?topic=10948.0). My computer explodes as soon as the subtitles kick in, though the video before that is still smooth.

In the Config tab, only DirectVobSub gives me subtitles. The rest don't show anything. Will troubleshoot more later - going out in a minute.

I have read about the false positives that are being generated from a few AV programs, AVG being one of them. After reviewing the information here, I am confident that this is a false positive. I just have 2 general questions.

1) I have had this codec downloaded on my system since December of 2009; AVG is just now finding the "false positive". Any ideas as to why this would show up after all of this time? Seems like a really long time for the file to be on my computer before it's recognized by AVG.

2) Any suggestions for a better free AV software, or is there such a thing as "good and free"? lol

Thanks and BTW, thanks for the Vista codec package. After days of frustration, I finally found yours, and it fixed my problem. I use audio files for work and was just about to give up and go back to my old computer when I found your download

Problem I have is when i try to play a DVD thru MCE 7, I get a blank screen and my TV acts like it lost signal. I have to reboot my pc to get desktop back. I'm thinking it may be a codec issue but not 100% sure. I can play any of my DVD's thru media player, but if I use media center or powerDVD, i get a blank lost signal screen and have to re-boot. I did a system restore back to a week ago when everything was working. No issues, but now i need to be able to play mkv files. I know i downloaded divx codec and that did not work and another one before I found sharks codec. I'm still getting a blank screen when i play any DVD and now when i play a mkv file. I'm thinking I've got a codec issue, or to many conflicting. I plan on uninstalling shark codec thru the help tab, then any other codec thru control panel and re-install sharks codec tonight when i get home. Any other suggestions?

Hi Shark007
I have enabled ffdshow in live tv/recorded tv, would love the ability to try it for my mp3 music collection. I am unable to locate the "Swap Tab" you mention here.
I am using VMC, UAC is on, have installed the latest package. Everything works great, Thank you for creating such a great product.

edit; just had a look at the wiki and found information about swap tab, I don't have this tab for some reason.

Shark I just did a Win7 x64 reformat and the first thing I do is disable UAC as well. Doing this has never caused me any issues with your codec packs, theyve always played MKVs for me just fine. Perhaps because I have only one account that is admin level as well?
