Introduction to Codecs

A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal. The word codec is a portmanteau (a blending of two or more words) of 'compressor-decompressor' or, more accurately, 'coder-decoder'. Information Source

The Settings Application

Top of page
The Settings Application is a utility, designed to help users easily adjust thier playback environment by;
  • Controlling source splitters ”on-the-fly” for specific filetypes.
  • Allow you to Enable or disable video file thumbnails.
  • Giving users quick and easy access to the configurations of decoders and splitters.
  • Providing numerous small tools and tweaks to give the user a complex yet easy-to-use command center for all multimedia handling.

There is still one more issue that needs to be explained so all the actions you'll make in the settings application(s) will not be in vain.

User Account Control, also known as UAC, is a technology and security infrastructure introduced with Microsoft's Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating system. It aims to improve the security of Microsoft Windows by limiting application software to standard user privileges until an administrator authorizes an increase.

In this way, only applications trusted by the user may receive administrative privileges, and malware should be kept from compromising the operating system. In other words, a user account may have administrator privileges assigned to it, but applications that the user runs do not inherit those privileges unless they are approved beforehand or the user explicitly authorizes it. Information Source

If a software needs to access the more secure parts of the system, the computer administrator can elevate the softwares' privileges, and thereby give it access.
Unless your user account is very limited, you will already have the administrator authorities and will be able to increase the privilegde level for any given program.

Many of the Settings Applications functions modify the systems registry, which is one of the restricted areas of Windows. To perform these actions it will need administrative privileges to work properly. (don’t worry, none of the registry entries will harm your system).

There are a couple of ways to give the Settings Application Administrative privileges.

  • Right-click the Settings Application shortcut and choose ”Run as administrator”.
  • If you use it often you can rightclick the shortcut and choose properties; select the advanced button and check the ”Run as administrator” checkbox. This action will illiminate the need to rightclick.

*** IF YOU CHOOSE TO DISABLE UAC - DO NOT SEEK HELP ON THE FORUMS - YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN ***

N.B. If you still haven’t figured out how to open the Settings Application, follow this small instruction:

A shortcut of the Settings Application is located in the Start Menu; click on All programs and find the folder named:
Shark007 Codecs
All versions of the Settings Application will be inside.

The .exe/root Settings Application file, can be found in the following directories;

C:\Program Files\VistaCodecPack\Tools in Vista/XP
C:\Program Files\Win7Codecs\Tools in Windows 7
C:\Program Files\Shark007\Tools in x64

A suggested deviation from a default installation:
Open the x86 settings application using a rightclick on the shortcut and selecting ' Run as administrator'.

  • Press Reset All in the lower left
  • Select the checkbox at the bottom to use SUGGESTED settings
  • On the Audio TAB, match your hardware
  • On the Config TAB, in the lower boxes, match your hardware
  • If you're experiencing difficulty with MP3 audio, choose FFDshow for MP2/3 on the SWAP TAB

Default tag

You might have noticed that every section in the Settings App. has one of it’s options marked with a (default) tag, this is the option that is automatically selected on a clean install.
The default option is carefully decided, based on users input in the forum and overall stability on all platforms, but it is not necessarily the right one for you.
Try testing the various settings to see what fits you best.

Reset All

At the bottom of the Settings Application you will find a button named ”Reset All”. When everything has gone wrong; files that worked a moment ago, has stopped working, the audio is missing, thumbnails won’t generate, and you can’t remember what options in the settings app. you have recently been messing around with, this button is your way out.

It will set ALL user configurable options back to thier default values.

If the problems are still not resolved, a reinstallation of the codec package is recommended.

x64 Components addon

IMPORTANT: The x64 version of VCP/W7C is only an add-on, and requires the 32-bit release of VCP/W7C to be installed for full functionality.

Keep in mind that 32bit players use 32bit codecs and that Media Center on an x64 Operating System is 64bit only which requires 64bit codecs and adjustments for playback in Media Center need to be made in the x64 settings application.

A suggested deviation from a default installation:
Open the x64 settings application using a rightclick on the shortcut and selecting ' Run as administrator'.

  • check the checkbox at the bottom to use SUGGESTED settings

Config TAB

Config TAB

Configuration Settings

FFDshow is a DirectShow and VFW (Video for Windows) codec.

It can decode and encode a vast array of video and audio formats, using opensource codec libraries incl. libavcodec and xvid.
Along with FFDshow’s encoding and decoding capabilities, it also offers an extensive range of post-prossessing filters, to enhance the video/audio experience. They can be configured through the three first entries in the ”configuration settings” section. VCP/W7C is using the more up to date ffdshow-tryouts codec, with the builds provided from XvidVideo.RU.

FFDshow buttons:

1. FFDshow video configurations can be accessed here. wiki: FFDshow Video Wiki (Incomplete)
2. FFDshow audio configurations can be accessed here. wiki: FFDshow Audio Wiki (Incomplete)
3. FFDshow encoder configurations can be accessed here. Couldn’t find a good link.

Xvid is an opensource video codec library used to decode and encode MPEG4 ASP formatted videos.

Xvid buttons:

4. Xvid decoder configurations can be accessed here. Couldn’t find a good link.
5. Xvid encoder configurations can be accessed here. Guide: Xvid Guide

Misc Configurations

Buttons: (In descending order from top)

1. FFDshow DXVA To be added

2. madFLAC is a DirectShow decoder filter for FLAC files.

3. Haali Media Splitter is a DirectShow splitter for .MKV (matroska), OGG/OGM, .TS, .M2TS and .MP4.

Two good options to be aware of in Haali Media Splitter:
  • You can turn on Haali’s system tray icon under options | Interface | Show tray icon, and then set the value to ”Yes”. Through the system tray icon you can get quick access to the different audio and subtitle tracks in files splitted by Haali, and change them ”on-the-fly” during playback.

  • Haali has a great feature, which enables you to select in what order you want your audio and subtitles to be played/shown.
If you go to the options menu in Haali and choose languages, you will see 5 sub-menus. For setting your language priorities, you only need to pay attention to the first 3 entries. You can either choose to select your priorities separately, meaning if you are only interested in which order you want your audio to be played, in your files, use the sub-menu; ”Audio language priority”.
If it’s only the subtitle order you want to set, use the sub-menu; ”Subtitle language priority”.
But if you have a specific order of audio and subtitles combinations in mind, then you should use the third entry; ” Audio and Subtitle languages”.
Let us take some examples:
Let’s say you are from Japan and want to, whenever possible, watch your movies with Japanese audio and if Japanese is not available you want English as your second priority. To do this go to the language menu and choose the ”Audio language priority”, type in:
Jap,eng, (The languages is seperated with a comma.)
This will make Japanese your first priority of audio tracks and English the second, in files splittet by Haali Media Splitter. Notice that 3 letter langauge codes is used to specify the languages, a link with all language codes will be posted below.
Of course if you don’t care which language your movies are in as long as you have proper subtitles, this can be done by ignoring the Audio sub-menu and go straight to the ”Subtitle language priority”. Type in your priorities the same way as you did before:
Jap,eng,
Now the subtitle tracks will be selected in the order you have given, in this case Japanese first and if not available then English.
The last sub-menu ”Audio and Subtitle languages” gives you the option to select your priorities in pairs, separated by semicolons e.g.:
Jap,eng;eng,off;*,eng;
In the example above, Japanese with English subtitles will be the your first priority. If this combination is not possible, then you want English with no subtitles as your second choice. If neither the first or second priority is possible, then you just want the default audio track with English subtitles.
If none of your requirements are met, then it will automatically use the default tracks.
All the language codes are available here: www.loc.gov under the ISO 639-2 category.
Other language tags that are good to know is:
* : Default language track
Und : If the language track is not defined, then use this tag.
Off :If subtitles are available, but you don’t wont them to be shown, use this tag.
None :if subtitles are not available, this tag can be used.

4. DirectVobSub is a DirectShow filter for subtitle rendering. It supports all the most popular subtitle formats (.srt, .ass/.ssa, .idx/.sub and more).
It’s also able to extract subtitles from VOB (DVD) files into a separate format. Recently it has become more known as VSFilter. Guide: Divx-Digest Guide

5. AC3Filter Config To be added

Subtitles Control

Use Subtitle Control to select the subtitle filter, you want to use for handling of your subtitles. Select ”No Subtitles” to disable all external subtitle filters. Selecting to use ”No Subtitles” can often solve stutter problems for slow(older) computers.

Hardware Output

The documentation on colorspaces could easily take up a whole guide of it’s own, so we’ll have to take a very simplified approach to the subject.
If you want to know more about colorspaces, use google.

Basically, when you watch the colors on your computer monitor, you’ll see the full range of colors, known as full range RGB (Red,Green,Blue).
It’s variation goes from (0,0,0) which is black, to (255,255,255) which is white, this allows more than 16 million different combinations of colors.

On the other hand, most TV and Projectors, use a lower range of colors, it only goes from 16-235, where (16, 16, 16) is black, (235, 235, 235) is white.

When watching videos on a computer monitor, it expects to use the full range of colors it has at it’s disposal, but almost any video source, is using the lower range of colors (16-235) and also another colorspace called YCbCr, as they are ripped from either a TV stream or a DVD.

The ”Monitor” option in VCP/W7C can convert the the video stream to use the full range colorspace (0-255) and thereby take advantage of all the colors available on your monitor. Some find the increase in saturation to much for their taste, but it varies from person to person.
If you watch your videos on a TV monitor or a projector via your computer, there is no need to use the full range of colors as it rarely goes higher than 16-235, and in this case it’s recommended that you use the ”TV/Projector” option instead, it will still convert your colors to the RGB colorspace, but will keep the original colors.

Consult your TV/Projector manual on what range of colors it can use.

MC Sharpen

Can be used to enhance the picture within Media Center. Proper description pending...

Disable Xvid Decoder/AC3Filter

Can be used to easily toggle the Xvid Decoder and AC3Filter on and off.
If you're experiencing audio issues and have AC3Filter enabled, it is recommended to try disabling it, as a solution.

Misc TAB

Misc TAB

Save and Restore Settings

The Save and Restore Settings feature is under construction.

At this time, the feature is NOT fully functional.

The Save and Restore buttons located in the Misc tab, can be used to save all the current configurations set in both the Settings Application as well as the Splitters, Decoders and other filters.

Whenever you find yourself pleased with your current setup, just go to the Misc TAB and click the "Save ALL Settings" button.

During uninstallation, you will be prompted with a pop-up asking whether or not, you wish to delete your saved settings.
In case you want to use your setup again on a later occasion (e.g. after updating the Codec Pack), select No in order to keep your settings.

After saving your settings, you will always be able to restore them again, by a simple click of the Restore button.

The settings will be saved to C:\ProgramData\Win7codecs
To export the settings to another computer, just:

  • Right-click the proper Settings Application, while holding Shift.
  • Select Open File Location in the context menu.
  • Copy the Restore.ini and VCP_Backup.reg to the same location (C:\ProgramData\Win7codecs)
onto any of your other computers with the same Operating System.
  • Use the Restore button to "Import" the settings to your Settings Application.
  • You cannot use the files from Windows 7 on a Vista Machine or ViceVersa

Rebuild WMP Library

This tool is for when the Library gets out of whack as it tends to do occaissionally on Windows 7.
It will delete the current cached library (for files and associated graphics, but NOT the actually files themselves) and build a new cache using the settings you provided within Windows Media Player.

Render and Analyze media file

The renderer button is provided to allow you to test a files functioality by completely bypassing Windows Media Foundation. This renderer uses Directshow only. The Analyze button uses the popular tool known as MediaInfo to display the contents of a container such as MKV or AVI.

Test File Integrity

This tool will test files for their 'completeness'. If the result from this tool is anything other than an eight digit alphanumeric result, the file is damaged beyond repair and you should choose to delete the file itself. Take caution using this tool; extremely large files and can take an awefully long time to finnish testing.

Tray Icons

If you are one of those people who find the displayed tray icons annoying, they can be disabled using these selections.

Create a Media Playlist

You can use this button to create a list of media files, audio and video for continuous playback in the Windows players. The checkbox below the button allows you to decide what player you prefer to use, to play the created playlist. If this playlist is subsequently added to the startup folder, you can have it played on bootup of the system in the prefered player.

Sampler

This tool was designed to make troubleshooting even easier via online support. Whenever you experience a playback problem with a (specific) video file, just drag n drop the troublesome file into this text field and click "Create". This will output a 40MB sample of the original file (which is, in no way, altered during the process), in the same directory as the original file.
Upload the sample to http://mediafire.com, post a new thread in Shark007's Forum, that contains the URL from mediafire, and detailed information about your problem.
By doing so, the possibility of receiving a working fix in the follow up post, will be severely increased.

This tool was designed and provided by Xanashi.

DivFix++

DivFix++ is a tool, which purpose is to repair broken AVI files. It is now possible to repair your broken files, by dragging and dropping any given AVI file (currently with the exception of AVI files containing H264 streams) onto this text field, and then click "Fix It". The processed output will be available in the same directory as the original (broken) file, and will have a "DivFix++." prefix in it's filename. The original file will be kept, in case DivFix++ wont be able to repair the file properly.

Small note: DivFix+2Core (Beta) now supports AVC/H264 streams in AVI files.

DivFix++ is an opensource project and can be found at http://divfixpp.sourceforge.net along with other useful tools.

Audio TAB

Audio TAB

Audio Setup and automation

The instruction below assumes you have a current version of at least 2.4.1 / 5.6.2 or newer.

If your audio output is S/PDIF, HDMI, digital or optical... go to the Audio TAB of the settings application and select to 'use pass-through' under the FFDshow heading. If your receiver cannot handle HD audio, go to the Config TAB, press FFDshow Audio config, scoll the leftside column and select Output, in the righthand window, de-select the HD formats.

To be able to control the volume from the PC rather than from the amplifier when using digital output (hdmi), go to the 'Control Panel | Sound' applet and double click the active digital output device. Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck the two Exclusive Mode boxes.

The lefthand side of this tab is setup automatically using system detection.

If your output is anolog, and the speaker configuration on the leftside is not displaying correctly, you need to go to the Control panel / Sound applet and setup your speakers in there properly. Once doing this in control panel, and subsequently openning the settings application once again, the leftside of the Audio TAB should now relfect the settings of the Sound applet.

Although the leftside automation can be disabled by the user, (any user-click on the leftside disables automation),
It is recommended that at no time should the user click the leftside manually.

S/PDIF

S/PDIF, short for Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format, is a way to carry digital audio signals between hardware devices, without having to convert the audio signal to analog first.

By using S/PDIF you can stream an audio signal from your computer through an amplifier to an externally connected speaker setup, without losing any quality in the audio, which would otherwise have been degraded in a conversion process.

When using S/PDIF, you will have to enable it in your systems audio configuration too.
Do this by right-clicking the audio icon in the system tray (near the clock), select ”Volume Mixer”, click ”Device” and check ”S/PDIF”.

Set AC3Filter to use S/PDIF

Use this setting to turn AC3Filter S/PDIF pass-through on/off.
Choosing AC3Filter for S/PDIF auto disables FFDshow for this output.

FFDshow S/PDIF pass-through

Use this setting to turn FFDshow S/PDIF pass-through on/off.
Choosing FFDshow to handle S/PDIF disables AC3Filter completely

Other Audio Options

Enable MPC Audio renderer
This is an audio renderer for use with alternate players that have difficulty sending HD (High Definition) Audio to the amplifier. When choosing to use the FFDshow S/PDIF pass-through option, this renderer is automatically enabled. You would then have to use the interface provided with the alternate player to choose this audio as the renderer for use by the output of that player.

Normalize Audio
If you find that volume levels are 'out of whack', meaning it is loud for one video clip but soft in another,
choosing to use 'normalizaton' will often correct this issue.

Support M4A containing ALAC
M4A audio files can contain 2 different types of audio codecs. The majority of them, and the default setting of 'unchecked', is for playback of M4A files containg AAC audio. If your M4A files contain ALAC audio, then proceed to check the checkbox for decoding of this particular type of M4A file.

AVI TAB

AVI TAB

Splitter Selection

The default selection, Microsoft, should work for most files.

If you have a problem file, and setting gabest allows it to play properly, most likely the file is somewhat damaged. Fortunately a tool, called DivFix++ can repair such files. DivFix++ is now available via the Misc TAB, drag n drop the broken file to the lower text field and click the "Fix it" button, in order to repair the file. AVI files containing multiple audio tracks are best handled using Haali's splitter.

H264 TAB

H264 TAB

Selection of a Decoder

It is recommended that novice users choose the SUGGESTED settings at the bottom of the settings interface to achieve optimal playback of all files containing H264 video. The selections of this TAB assist the Windows Players in the use of alternate H264 decoders.

All H264 decoders are supplied with the distribution package.

MKV TAB

MKV TAB

Splitter Selection

For most MKV playback using Haali is recommended. If you MKV file contains TrueHD audio then selecting Gabests splitter will be required to allow this audio format to playback properly.

MOV~OGG TAB

MOV~OGG TAB

Splitter Selection

The filetype known as MOV has so many variations it is diffucult to keep track of them all. The majority of modern mov files will not require any changes. If the mov originated from a camera, then selecting the camera splitter is your best choice. Along with this selection you may find that you need to also set FFDshow's 'Uncompressed' audio setting to 'all supported' for the audio tracks to be heard.

OGG/OGM is one of those formats that is troublefree 99% of the time.

MPG~MP4 TAB

MPG~ MP4 TAB

Splitter Selection

When atempting to play an m2ts file that originated on a blu-ray disk, not only will you need to disable Windows Media Foundation on the SWAP TAB but you will also be required to use Gabests blu-ray splitter. Selection of this splitter automatically disable's Haali so the checkboxes below the selection are automated to switch the MKV splitter to gabest.

A new selection in version 2.3.8 is the ability to use an alternate decoder for LiveTV. This alternate decoder is only functional on 32bit Operating Systems.

SWAP TAB

SWAP TAB

Usage of the SWAP TAB

Most settings found here are more of an 'expert' feature that most novices will need a helping hand understanding when to use them. If seeking support on the forum for a specific issue, the forum moderators may suggest using one of the settings on this tab.

Here are some basic deviations from defaults:

  • For DTS audio on a DVD, you will need to disable Microsofts audio decoder.
  • Any variation of the TS file extension formats such as mts, m2ts, etc., will most likely require you to disable Windows Media Foundation.
  • Any file that contains VC1 video and is not in a wmv format will require you to set an alternate WVC1 decoder. the MPC-HC codec is most versatile for this purpose.
  • You may also find you can get better sound output from the FFDshow MP2/3 selection especially if that audio is in an MKV container.

Help TAB

Help TAB

The most important button on this tab is the UNINSTALL button. All uninstalls will require you to use this button. If you recently created a new user account, use of the button to 'setup a new user account' would be imperitive.

In the upper right, there is a hypertext link that will bring you to this WIKI.

Troubleshooting Information

Top of page
The troubleshooting section of this guide will consist of frequently asked question (FAQ), followed by verified answers,
that will guide users to a satisfying solution to their problems.

It is split into individual chapters, each containing questions regarding a certain kind of issues (e.g. video, sound, or thumbnail issues).

A quick search in the Table of Contents (TOC) , found in the top of this page, will give you a good overview of all currently resolved problems.

Before Troubleshooting

Drivers

Remember to update your drivers.

Before you start troubleshooting and/or complaining at the forum, you’ll have to consider the possibility that VCP/W7C might not be the source of your problem.

VCP/W7C’s setting app. is configured, so the majority of users will never even have to open it, to get their video files to play properly.
That’s why it would be a good idea to rule out all of the external causes to many common playback problems first.

One of the primary causes for screen and speaker issues, is outdated drivers (e.g. when it sounds like the the video is playing, but there is no visual picture, just black or blue screen, or if your speakers or headphones is completely muted, even the background noise is missing).

This can be solved by updating your current hardware drivers. Depending on what the problem is (sound issues = Sound Card and display/screen issues = Graphic Card),
you will have to go to the Hardware vendors website, to find the latest driver.
Download the driver, make a system back up before proceeding (sometimes drivers do more harm, than they do good) and install it.

If you do not know the name of the Vendor for your graphic card or sound card,
press Win+R on your keyboard and type devmgmt.msc, and look for ”Display adapters” and ”Sound, video and game controllers”, expand them and take note of the names.

Here are the links to the most popular graphic card drivers download locations:

Conflicts

Another common problem is conflicts. Conflicts can occur when you install two or more codec softwares from different sources. The Shark007 x86 and x64 releases are designed to work together and can be installed to the same system without a problem. The 32bit Shark007 Codec installers have a 'Conflict detection and removal' routine builtin them that will automatically search for the following codec releases in thier default installation locations and uninstall them if found using their own uninstallers:

AC3Filter Spdifer
AC3Filter
Haali MatroskaSplitter
Real Alternative
K-Lite Codec Pack - all versions
Combined Community Codec Pack
ffdshow standalone installer
XviD standalone installer
Storm Codec Pack
XP Codec Pack
Satsuki Decoder Pack
Theorica Divx ;-) Codecs
LD-Anim
ACE Mega CoDecS Pack
MUSK Codec Pack v5
TTPack
Recode Media
CodecPack
Essentials Codec Pack
Xiph.Org Ogg Codecs

This does not necessarily resolve all conflicts. Other software's with codecs included, such as video encoding software, video converters, audio converters etc. are installed, then there is a greater chance, that they will interfere with VCP/W7C’s codecs and create problems.

Try installing VCP/W7C, and if no conflicts occurs, then you don’t have to worry about it, but if your files does not play after a clean install, the only way to deal with it, is to uninstall all software that could be interfering with VCP/W7C, one by one, to detect the cause of the conflict.

One last thing to take note of:
The Shark007's Codecs are tested with 7 different players on 2 different Operating Systems, Windows 7 and Windows Vista, in both the 32 and 64-bit environments The players used for testing are; Windows Media Player x86/x64, Windows Media Center x86/x64, Media Player Classic Homecinema x86/x64, and the original Media Player Classic (rev 106)

It is recommended to use any of these players together with Shark007 Codecs, as they can assure a high compatibility with the package. Any other DirectShow player should work just fine with also, as long as you disable thier internal codecs. Player not mentioned here will not be supported when asking for help in the forum.

Forum Support

If your problem is not covered in the troubleshooting section or is still persisting after you’ve tried all possible solutions, don’t despair.
Shark007 maintains a forum at http://shark007.net/forum and your inquiry will be responded to within hours.

Before posting a new thread, be sure to:

  • Use the forum SEARCH feature. Most likely you are not the 1st with this problem.
  • Install current releases BEFORE asking for help. Check the title in the Settings Application for the version number.

When posting, remember to post to the proper subforum. Each release has its own subforum. Only post to the x64 forum if your issue is with x64 Media Center/WMP/MPC HC.

To receive fast and efficient help, be sure to provide the following information:

  • State your Operating System (e.g. Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM, Windows Vista Professional x86 etc.)
  • Be precise when descibing your issue, using as many details as possible.
  • Provide a sample of the file which is causing the problem. To do this, open the Settings Application and go to the Misc TAB. From here, drag n drop the file onto the upper text field and click "create" to cut a 40 MB sample of the troubled file, upload the sample to http://mediafire.com. Place the download URL in your post.
