HDR playback is dependent on the video renderer.
WMP does not allow substituting the video renderer so you must use Media Foundation for HDR playback.
Media Foundation codecs are available on the Help TAB of my Application.

Very helpful, thank you. will try this. We are using your MPC-BE, not sure what that changes

When using MPC-BE sourced from my Tools page
HDR playback is supported by default.
I would suggest to Uninstall your current installation to wipe out previous settings.
Then re-install it fresh and try again.
